There might have been a lot of excitement when your little one went to school for the first time on Wednesday, but the first Monday after the big day is often a completely different matter.

We asked Nora Rossouw, head of Grade 1 at Totius Primary School in Cape Town, about what you can do to help your Grade 1 not have a blue Monday.

  • Promise to pack a special snack in the lunch box. Paste a family picture on their pencil case so they have easy access to it.
  • Invite a friend over to your home for a weekend play date. This will provide motivation to return to school because they’ll see each other again.
  • Remind them that they’re now really going to learn to read and write, as well as many other things.
  • Promise one-on-one time after school with your so they can tell you what the learnt that day.
  • If you notice something might be bothering them, encourage them to tell you and then discuss it with the teacher if necessary.
