Memorialising Madiba around the world

There are thousands of tributes, honours and awards in Nelson Mandela's name throughout the world. From a simple street to a nuclear particle, the former president has been honoured decade after decade. Here are a few of the ways the world has decided to show their respect to Madiba.

  • The Mandela’s Gold strelitzia was renamed to honour Mandela in 1996. (Marc Eschenlohr, Flickr)

  • Nelson Mandela Day was created in 2009 by the UN General Assembly. It falls on Madiba's birthday (18 July) and is a call to action for citizens around the world to do good. (GovernmentZA, Flickr)
  • Nelson Mandela Bridge in Johannesburg, completed in 2003, connects Braamfontein and Newtown. The bridge was named after Madiba to honour his role in uniting and connecting South Africa. (Phillip McReynolds, Flickr)
  • 'Madiba' is a restaurant in Brooklyn, New York. Founded in 1999, it aims to recreate the feeling of a traditional South African shebeen. (Idil Elveris)
