A Fair Society - By Gupta Standards

05 May 2013, 10:01
If I climb over the wall of Waterkloof Air Force Base, walk around the movements area and then make my way home, if someone finds out I was in the area, I shall be arrested!  I'll sit in detention until the authorities have determined whether I should have been there or not!  I won't be released while a few of my Air Force friends, family and business associates decide to hold an inquiry!  So what is so different about the Guptas?
Why did it take until Friday for government to convene a press conference to pronounce on the issue?  Why have people been detained and suspended so quickly, but the criminals have been allowed to attend a weeding at Sun City and then exit quietly via Oliver Thambo Airport?  The military have claimed there was a security breach, so what has been done to interview the breachers?  What has been done to interview the conspiritors of the breach?
Nothing!
In fact the people who have been arrested are so diminutive in rank, the possibility exists their crime is whistle blowing, not international espionage!
A Jet Airways aircraft flew into South Africa without the relevant permit and has been allowed to leave after paying a fine!  Plainly there was a failure of state departments.  Plainly there has been some inter-departmental collusion, but the Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) or Military Intelligence have not been called to investigate the aircraft, the passengers or the circumstances of the breach.  This is, a criminal matter!
Instead the Customs department has been asked to hand out declaration documents to 'Guests!'  They aren't guests!   They're criminals!  They entered a Military area without authorisation, received a 'bogus' SAPS escort and were politely handed a customs declaration note on reaching their resort destination!
Our parliamentarians have just passed an Information Bill which is designed to counter precisely the espionage such a security breach would represent!  Yet the Government, the Parliamentarians, the heads of public service and the public do nothing! Absolutely nothing!
This is not a Black/White issue.  This has nothing to do with past injustice.  This has to do with the present.  This has to do with the way the law has to progress. Without fear or favour, Otherwise all is anarchy!
In an orderly society laws are obeyed first, then they are enforced.  The Gupta family have business interests which use the public purse.  They are conspicuously influential.  Their position requires scrupulous adherence to the law - so as not to arouse suspicion.  The contrary here is true - and all we have is an apology.
I feel compelled to live like the Guptas.  I have decided every law which I do not agree, I shall break and bear the consequences.  My neighbor will do the same.  And his neighbor in turn.  I shan't expect any honesty from the public servant or representative.  The business community will do the same.  Then we'll have created the society the Guptas thrive in. No public scrutiny.  No inconvenience.  Just business as usual.
