A Letter to the Moaners and Complainers

23 July 2013, 10:35

Dear Negative Nellies,

You know who you are. You are the ones who moan about the cold in the middle of winter, the heat in the middle of a glorious Summer, the ones who complain about the music on the radio but make no effort to change the station, the ones who bang on about porn on Satellite TV when you don’t even subscribe to it!

You are the people who begrudged us our 67 minutes for Madiba, or if you like, for our fellow man in the name of Madiba and groused and moaned about the fact that:

A.      Charitable acts should be done every day and not just one day of the year. True but how many charitable acts do you do every day? Anyone? Didn’t think so.

B.      You (some of you, at any rate!) weren’t going to support a ‘terrorist’. Oh dear. Whatever.

What it actually amounted to was the fact that you were too lazy-arsed to do anything constructive for your fellowman, environment or indeed for yourselves. All you wanted to do was MOAN.

Now here’s the Royal Baby. Admittedly, the media has gone all out on this, flooding us with information from the minute Kate went into labour but amid all the doom and gloom surely a baby is good news? You’d think so, wouldn’t you? But, no! You still moan and complain and bang on about a tiny baby being born halfway around the world that clearly has no bearing on the way you live your life.  Some of the tweets and status updates and comments made around water-coolers have been downright nasty. If you don’t want to hear about it, switch off your radio. If you don’t want to read about it, don’t read a newspaper and if you don’t want to see it discussed online, then log off.  Yes, you’re entitled to your opinion but once is enough. Don’t bang on and on about it. It’s getting quite tiring as well as tiresome.

As South Africans, we are quick to criticise. The weather, the crime rate, the interest rate, food prices etc etc ad infinitum ad nauseum.  Yes, I know the crime rate is high,  yes, I know food is expensive but what can be achieved by constantly moaning and griping about it?

Complaining, blaming and criticising aren’t going to change any situation. You do realise that your moaning and constant complaining aren’t endearing you to anyone, don’t you? In fact, when I see people moaning online or hear them grousing around the coffee-station I make a beeline in the opposite direction.  It’s emotionally draining just being around you and negativity is contagious.  It perpetuates itself, breeds dissatisfaction and when you are so negative all the time, happiness must very hard to achieve.

I leave you with a quote by great statesman Winston Churchill:  “Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.”  It’s your attitude to things that affects the people around you. If you’re constantly negative,  people will react negatively towards you.  So maybe, lighten up a little. Read a little positive into that headline in the newspaper.  Do something constructive instead of just complaining and maybe we can all find a little positivity and be a little happier.

Can you read the situation?

The overwhelming majority of parents are not readers. This is not to say that they cannot read, but that they do not read. Reading is a foreign activity for most parents and this does not help their children's literacy. Read more...
