Airbag Jacket saves teenage motorcyclist

10 November 2011, 12:12
Lourens Koster a 17-year-old student escaped the clutches of death on the October 17 while on his way to school, when he was involved in a serious accident after a car collided with his motorcycle at an major intersection in Vanderbijlpark.

Lourens’ motorcycle will probably be written off due to the damage, indicating the severity of the impact. But he himself escaped death after the motorcycle airbag jacket he was wearing deployed on impact and protected all his vital organs including his spine and neck.

The paramedics of Netcare 911 that arrived at the scene of the accident found his shoes 30 metres from the place he was lying. The only injuries that the boy sustained was a broken right foot, broken left leg and nose, the rest of his body was unharmed after the motorcycle airbag jacket absorbed all the impact, which in the case of an accident victim who was not wearing an airbag jacket would possibly have suffered severe internal injuries or worse a broken back or neck

The paramedics on scene could at first not make heads or tails of this strange inflated jacket that Lourens had on, but after they removed his helmet they could safely remove the airbag jacket only to find that the boy had no injuries to his torso.

Lourens is doing well and recovering, although his currently bound to a wheel chair, he is spending his time at home to study, while his mother takes him to school to write his exams.

MotoAir Motorcycle Airbag Jackets have been around for over 8 years but have only recently found their way to South Africa. Used by many law enforcement agencies internationally, it still needs to be adopted by local law enforcement  agencies.
