Amending the Act won`t reduce crime.

04 November 2014, 12:24

ANC have only realised now that they are failing to control crime in this country. Only because Jackson Mthembu was shot and Senzo Meyiwa was killed. They even go on to issue a statement through their Chief Whip that these two shooting are a sign that there is a need to amend Firearms Control Act. There are so many ordinary people that have been shot dead in the streets, in their farms and their houses. The opposition parties have been raising this concern for as long as I remember, but all their effort have been politicized and then thrown away by the ruling party.

There is a problem of illegal firearms moving from one hand to another in our country in such a way that if you are in a township and you don`t have a gun you feel like an outsider and will be subjected to all sort of violent crimes. Is either you have a gun or you must know how to use it.

ANC want people to return illegal guns. These illegal firearms can only be returned by honest, trustworthy South African who owned them in order to protect themselves from the bad guys, considering that there will be amnesty. The problem is that bad guys will never return them but they will continue to execute their duties freely as they will be the only ones that have the firearms in community.

Good guys own illegal firearms for protection. Some of them wanted licensed guns, but because of circumstances beyond their control they can`t obtain licenses. One of the reasons is that ANC has made it difficult through the Firearms Control Act to get a license. Now they are going to amend the Firearms Control Act again and make it impossible to have a license.  Are they controlling firearms or licenses?

Which is the best way to protect your family from armed criminal in a country where there is poor policing? There is only one answer is to get an illegal firearm! That will scare criminals away, but they will go to those houses that they know no one have a firearm. So everyone will have illegal firearms as no one wants to robbed or killed. Then, there will be more illegal firearms in our communities.

But what are the possible solutions to solve this problem, putting strict measures into the Firearms Control Act is not a solution, but will create more problems than the ones we have. There is a wise man who once said; before a problem could be solved it needs to be clearly defined. I like this statement you don`t just need to define the problem but you need to clearly define it. Did ANC clearly define the problem? No, but they tried to find the way to move the blame from them to the Act which they prepared, then passed.

These guns have been in circulation before even democracy was born if there is any. Why is it now that the country is becoming trigger crazy? There are many factors, but the one that I will concentrate on is unemployment and drugs. I am not an investigator or a police but the way these two above mentioned high ranked persons have been shot it seems to be a robbery.

Then we can`t deny that this has to do with unemployment and drug abuse. The youth is frustrated because they can`t get any jobs and their responsibilities are increasing or they cannot longer sustain their addiction to drugs so they opt to violent crime. I can`t deny the fact that there are fools that are doing crime just for fun that is an exceptional case, but also need to be addressed. As I said there are many factors all of them are important.

ANC must make it its priority to address youth problems. They must skill them, then assist them in making sure that those skills are not wasted, by mentoring them, give them financial and emotional assistance to start their own projects. Evaluate the profitability of those projects, give advice where necessary. NB I used ANC instead of government because it the ANC that runs the parliament or country, it does not take any suggestion or recommendation from anyone. The guys that are called apposition parties in parliament are there to add the numbers whatever that they say will be ignored if it is great idea they will politicize it and vote against it. ANC have changed this country to be what I will call a modern dictatorship. The best solution is to get rid of ANC leadership or if need be ANC itself then we will have safer communities. Anyway what can you expect from a country whose President is over 70 years old. He will never think about any future or youth  because he does not have one and he has secured the one of his children.
