Not easy settling in

15 November 2010, 09:12  - John Barnes
I came to Australia by choice for a career opportunity and it was not an easy landing in a foreign country, not knowing anybody here

I was put into an apartment in a hotel, showed where the office is and then it was time to get on with life.

After a month the company informed me that they are only oblige to pay my hotel for a month and I must find my own place to live or pay the hotel myself.

I asked what is the best area to be renting and was told Western Australia and said there are a lot of properties there.

What I hate the most is fellow countrymen that got Australian citizenship and now they are Australians - you can never hide away from your country of birth. And then they try to tell me I am mad to go back to my beloved country.

They also refuse to speak their mother tongue language even if you do they answer you in English.

I go back once or twice every year. There is nothing wrong with the country; it is the people that make it bad and the ones that living abroad are also not doing it good by spreading negative stories.

About four months ago I was very negative and just wanted to go home and then a lot of South Africans shared the same feeling with me but cannot or do not want to go back. For the children’s future they stay a broad or they have sold everything back home and now have to start all over again and it is too expensive to go back.

When you decide to emigrate do not get rid of all your assets back home because  six to 12 months down the track you realise it was the wrong move and want to go back , but then there is nothing to go back to except family. I still have assets back home for when I return in the future!

Yes, it is tough to start over in a new country without knowing anybody and I will definitely return to South Africa as all my family is still there.

- Are you a South African living abroad interested in sharing your views? What is it like for a South African living in a foreign country or how do you view South Africa from a distance? Send us your columns to feedback@news24.com and you might get published in our new Beyond Borders section.
