Safe in England

23 November 2010, 12:05  - Trevor Snyman
We live in England now, in the beautiful county of West Sussex.

We have been here for two-and-a-half years.

We are enjoying our safe, free lives. We watch Bok rugby on the TV, follow Protea cricket on the internet, watch the idiots in government on MWEB, and hear from our friends on Facebook.

This year we have had a good, hot, braai summer, and have had a great social life.

There are many, many things that we miss about SA, but here my daughters can go out without us worrying about them being raped, mugged, hijacked or killed.

Hijackings don't happen where we live. We can drive freely, there are no all-conquering taxis and the rules of the road are obeyed.

There is crime, but the police care and take their jobs seriously and do not take bribes, or use their status in society for corrupt purposes. Criminals are caught and they pay for their crimes.

We can travel anywhere in any county by road or on the superb public transport systems.

Work is hard to come by, but my family are all doing good, honest work. We earn our lives here, there is no gravy train.

The food that we eat is of the best quality available, we have not eaten this well for many a year.

Our experiences of the care that is given to the elderly have been eye-opening. My mother-in-law has been treated with great respect, is undergoing long-term medical treatment - in the comfort of her own home with us. The nursing staff come to her to give her treatment!

People here value and celebrate their culture.

Will I ever return to SA?

Get rid of the ANC, the crime, the attitude of the new elite, the gravy trains and corruption, BEE, AA and all of the ill-conceived government policies, and I will...probably stay here.
