Is there a Bill Gates amongst SA philantrophists?

14 January 2013, 11:00
Is there a Bill Gates amongst SA philantrophists? I believe there are.

I raise this question in the light of the  phenomenal contribution of Bill Gates towards changing the lives of ordinary people through practical "can do" projects such as funding vaccine drives and personally attending to their execution in poor countries like Chad. Here's a quote wherein he said that 'the metric(sic) of success is lives saved, kids who aren't crippled" (Bill Gates in www.forbes.com, as quoted by Matthew Herper). Poverty in SA is cause for concern.

I believe that there are many billionaires amongst us who can emulate Bill Gates and alleviate the challenges of poverty through direct intervention and in so doing give socio-economic rights a human face as well as give vision to the principle of Ubuntu!Read what Bill Gates goes on to say.

Such an intervention is 'slightly different than units sold, profits achieved' and such a success is immesurable in the immediate to long term prognosis of SA emerging from the doldrums of poverty and unemployment. This is what, I opine, we should read from President Zuma's January 8 statement speech on Saturday 12 January 2013.
