Just another article on Race Relations

30 April 2014, 20:55

There’s a gentleman of mixed-race heritage who is a regular reader and commentator on these pages who appears to have declared himself the “Chief Officer In Charge” in the office of “Those Who Rebuke and Reprimand Anyone Who Mentions Race Relations in Here” – race, some would prefer the word banned, their unease is NOT MY problem.

It’s 2014 and it’s almost difficult to believe that the hottest topic making headlines here and abroad this week is….yep, you guessed, it…racism – you want to just smack someone in the face and scream “WAKE UP!” ,but that would be an exercise in futility because there’s a fair share of downright racist people from each race group, we all know a few, if You don’t you’re probably one of them.

Ever since we humans have dismally failed to quickly and decisively address the impact of past racial discrimination laws we have not found ourselves in the desired situation of resigning policies such as Affirmative Action to the scrapheap for good – race relations will remain a problem until we adequately redress the effects of past laws but that’s never going to happen judging by the going-ons in the US of A - they appear to have gone backwards at times. Case in point:

An owner of a top NBA team (an old, wrinkly Caucasian) was so incensed with his absolutely stunning young PoC (person of colour) trophy wife (girls, study hard, stay in school to avoid being in her shoes) for inviting basketball-great Magic Johnson to a game that he totally lost it and was caught on tape strongly forbidding her from inviting any Black people to their teams games, how pathetic is That coming from someone who owns a team made up mostly of Black players?

The players in question totally wimped out instead of taking a stronger stand, just like in Italy and Spain where Black players are taunted with monkey chants, Black players (and supportive White ones) should just leave those White players to play by themselves, there’s always Brazil, the home of the beautiful game, but money talks, as it always has.

And then we have Nick Cannon (Mariah Carey’s baby-daddy and husband) who dropped a new album titled ‘White People Party Music’ and created a White alter ego complete with checked shirt, beanie and red hair to promote it – he denies that doing Whiteface is the same as the Whites who did Blackface, “there’s a difference between undermining others and just making jokes” said he. The line between comedy using racial stereotyping and blatant racism has never been thinner but I’d have to pass on defending Nick on this one funny as he thinks he is - what’s good for the goose must be good for the gander.

Nobody put Him in charge of deciding what we must ignore and what we must take seriously - It’s hypocritical to say the least, like those who call their own people “Niggers’ and yet want to act offended when others do the same.

We All ought to be filled with shame that modern society Still has not been able to overcome racism, if it was just prevalent amongst the stupid and illiterate it would shed some sort of light on things However it knows no bounds – the racism scourge is everywhere And it’s All because of the human drive for triumph over others, the need to conquer others, a cheap-shot way of climbing over people or keeping people “in their place”, a way of justifying prejudice, a way of justifying past abuses and the lamest way of looking to feel you are a better human beings than others.

A new book also hit the stands recently, ‘How To Tell Black People Apart’ by David Alan Grier – inspired by all those red carpet mishaps where White presenters often mistake Black actors for other Black actors, Morgan Freeman for Danny Glover etc – by all accounts it is both funny And educational and perhaps for the millionth time, a good start.
