WITH regards to the N3 Townhill. If there is a major accident on this section of road like the one on Monday, one of the three alternative routes through Pietermaritzburg is the Old Howick Road, the 103.
This road is one lane up and one way down and very narrow; the grass in parts is longer than the height of a car; there is almost no drainage and when there is a storm, a red muddy river can be encountered as I found out on the Thursday before Easter; it is a major hazard for pedestrians and cyclists; and there is no lighting.
On Monday, the traffic had been rerouted because of an accident at the Peter Brown off-ramp and I counted three tankers that the authorities had let through, or the drivers of these vehicles had under their own volition taken this route. This is another accident waiting to happen. The Old Howick Road needs urgent attention. Failure to upgrade this road is negligent.
