Love God

24 February 2014, 09:13
LOVE FOR GOD----------------------
There are some spiritual things which are not absolutely necessary, though they are important for our spiritual growth and maturity. But the love of God must be at the very heart of every person. If a person does not love God, that person has never felt the love of God in his heart. That person has never met Jesus Christ, the son of God. That person has never been renewed. It should be clear that our love for God is as a result of God’s love for us. We love him because he first loved us. There was no reason for God to love us, but he chose to love us. Yes, for no reason God loved us and he loves us still. God is merely being himself in loving us since ‘God is love’ – but we need not ignore or take lightly such affection. We are commanded to love God above all else.

If a person does not love God, such a one is not born of God. We love God because he first loved us. But we also love him because of his nature and character. Upon spending time with him, we see that he is a loveable God. We grow into loving him for who he is and what he is. People do not like something because they like it – but because their affections, passions, desires and judgments influence their will into that direction. No person can stand up and honestly say, ‘Without the help of anything or anyone, I love God.’ A person can only love God when he has reasons for doing so. The first reason for loving God which influences the intellect so as to turn the affections is, “We love him because he first loved us.” We first believe the love of God to us before we love God in return. I, a sinner, do not believe that God loves me because I feel I love him. First I believe he loves me, sinner as I am – and then having believed, I come to love him. Loving God first is not the first step, and in truth that is impossible. Your first step is to believe that God loves you, and when that truth is fully fixed in your soul by the Spirit, a fervent love for God will come from within.

Every person that was ever saved had to come to God not as a lover of God, but as a sinner – and to believe in God’s love to him as a sinner. The truth is, you must love God. But you will never love him until you believe him, and especially believe in his love as revealed in Christ.

“Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” – Romans 5.
