SABC TV Licenses: Legalised Theft?

30 January 2014, 12:50

It is that time of the year again. School fees must be paid. The petrol price is still rising. We all spent too much over Christmas. Etc. And yes, it is time to pay your TV License. Yes, more pressure for the consumer in these hard economic times. We received a kind reminder this morning in the form of an SMS stating that we have to pay within 5 days or we will be handed over to the lawyers for collection. Thank you – very nice of you there SABC. However, I would like to question the mandate that the SABC has on TV licenses? After all, times have changed. For instance, in our case, we don’t even use the TV as a TV per se. It is only used for the Playstation and for a screen for our one PC. Why then must we pay for a TV License? I know we are not the only household that does this and it is a growing trend to use the larger screens for computing and not for watching the drivel that the SABC produce for terrestrial viewing. We don’t even have an antenna. But alas, we must pay! Or face the lawyers! I think it’s time for this to end. For me this is akin to having to pay Telkom a license fee in order to use my Blackberry. So Mr. Yunus Carrim – I call upon you to abolish this madness and make sense in a modern world.
