The thing I hate about the Oscar Pistorius case

22 April 2014, 13:33

Let me start by saying I have no particular difficulty with how the Oscar Pistorius matter with regards to it being broadcast and the general prosecution of same.

Furthermore I am not a legal expert; in fact I am a layman in this regard. We all have our opinions of what the outcome of this matter ought to be. It is very well discussed. However, my opinion of whether or not Oscar is guilty is not subject to this article. I feel the law should run its course and that this case serves as a prime example of how a court case is run. To some of us, our first experience and what an experience it is. Again, not the subject of my article.

I have no particular love for any accused in the same circumstances. I believe Oscar should not be treated any different from anyone other accused. The law purports us all to be equal in its eyes, doesn’t it?

I have a problem with the kind of jokes generated by this case. By all means make light of the way Oscar cries when Nel questions him. Make light of the endeavours from both defence and prosecution. It however angers me that to some of us even if Oscar may be guilty, see this tragedy as some kind of justification to make fun of his legs.

Away from this case, away from his personal issues, I find it to be in extremely bad taste to make fun of something he had no control over. To me there is nothing more grotesquely disturbing than any person making light of the disability of another in whatever the circumstances may be.

In the event that Oscar is found guilty, then by all means put him in jail, do with him what the law allows you to do, but do not use this as an excuse to expose your prejudice and / or general ignorance.

There are a lot of people out there with all kinds of disabilities. By some making light of Oscar’s disability you are also insulting those people. People who find themselves in a quagmire, a quagmire which Oscar against all odds overcame. For this, irrespective of everything he may or may not have done, I for one will always have respect for him.

This inhuman effort by him, to even dare to dream about running in the Olympics, knowing he does not have legs gives meaning to the words NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE. For that, you will have to be a fool not to have respect for. So why make fun of his disability? He did without legs, what most of us can’t even dream of doing with full abled bodies.
