United we should stand, South Africa

31 March 2014, 12:10

When I think of my Country, the 1st word that comes to mind is UNITY.  I have always found Unity to be something so magical, whether being part of it or just witnessing it.  When people stand United for whatever cause, Joy fills my heart and I find myself smiling instantly. I think we can all say that at one point of our lives, we stood united for something – whether it be standing proud in Unity for the School we attended, the soccer team we supported, unity in love for those we call Family, or United in the Country to which we belong.. Being able to say – I BELONG and being proud of being apart of something.

UNITED - “Joined together politically, for a       common purpose, or by common feelings.”

I am 22 years of age, I have always been very proud to call myself a South African, I am so proud to be a part of a Country so full of diversity and so full of beauty. I know for a fact there is no other place on Earth that could measure up to the country I call home, no other place in the world I would rather be. I remember back when South Africa hosted the FIFA World Cup, there was something so amazing about how South Africans stood together, how proud we all were to call ourselves South Africans.  Though we were strangers to one another, to the rest of the World – We were a country strongly United.

Sadly, the Diversity that once made me fall in love with this Country is now the same thing keeping us divided. Sadness consumes my entire being where Joy once filled my heart. Honestly, I feel each one of us residing in this country needs to accept blame for all the evil that lurks in every dark corner and for turning a blind eye to the injustice system within our country. We should also take blame for all the children forced to grow up in a country where they will NEVER be safe. My question is - for how long are we going to sit back and just accept all that is going wrong in this Country?  How much more must happen before we decide it is time to stand in Unity to demand a better future for us all?

Undoubtedly, whenever I hear a news bulletin on the radio, read a newspaper article or even browse the internet for the latest news, I come across an article that makes my heart so sad, to the point where I feel so afraid to live in this country I know as my Home. Babies and 7 year old girls are being raped by grown men, 14 year old boys are raping young girls and the elderly are being brutally killed.  Armed Robberies, murders, sexual assaults, molestation, rape and abuse - all of which appear in headlines everyday around South Africa. Why are such sadistic things happening everyday in this country??

Forced to obey the Law that doesn’t show us Justice? I refuse.

Are we going to leave the future of our country in the hands of the Police of South Africa? They did after all take an oath to serve and protect us right? No. I cannot believe how often I read about an officer of the law committing a criminal offence and getting away with it. How can our Police call themselves OFFICERS OF THE LAW yet permit and force bribery unto us? Surely this means anyone can commit a crime granted they can pay the right price?? This is obscene! Who do we turn to in times of need when those we should be able to call are so corrupt in all they do?! I ADMIT I DO NOT TRUST ANY MAN DRESSED IN POLICE UNIFORM.

I know many of us will justify ignorance by saying that ignorance is bliss.. Being ignorant is not bliss, choosing to ignore all that which is going on in our country is everything but bliss. It’s cowardly, and beyond that – it is selfish. Remaining ignorant to what is going on right NOW in our beloved country only guarantees a doomed near future. We have allowed the wrong people to control this country for too long, people who we chose to Lead our country would rather fund their private homes with unnecessary luxuries while children all over go to bed with empty stomachs and sad hearts.

When will South Africans realise that things will not get better with chance, things will only get better with change!! A better future for us all does not lie with taking a chance on the same people feeding us empty promises time and time again. It also will not get better in HOPE things will improve – a better future lies in making the necessary CHANGES this country needs.. STAND UP AND DO SOMETHING SOUTH AFRICA. The change this country needs starts with Me, it starts with You and it starts with every South African coming together to stand in unity to achieve the life we have been promised all these years. It is time for us as South Africans to take the future of our country into our own hands. WE CANNOT DO THE SAME THING AND EXPECT DIFFERENT RESULTS! For as long as we do nothing, nothing will change.

South Africans who are wasting their days patiently waiting for the man we call our president to put an end to all the pain and suffering are the biggest fools of all. I will no longer sit back and allow our president to destroy the home we have built in unity - he is the worst thing to ever happen to South Africa and has put shame to everything Nelson Mandela made possible for us. WAKE UP SOUTH AFRICA!!

I am sick of being lied to by those we call Leaders, I am also tired of being reminded what the colour of my skin is – RACISM EXISTS ONLY BECAUSE THEY KEEP IT ALIVE. For as long as we allow it, race will ALWAYS be a factor keeping us divided. They claim to ensure we “live in equality” but they are the people keeping Apartheid alive 15 years long after it ended. If we continue to let race be an issue we will always be on opposing sides, which will always result in the WRONG people remaining Leaders of our country. It is never emphasised that beneath our skin colour we all are HUMAN, they would much rather highlight what makes us different. Why do South Africans find such difficulty in accepting and respecting one another despite physical or religious differences? Why do we give these incompetent leaders the pleasure of keeping us divided. Our leaders want to remind us that we are different to keep us fighting. As long as we are fighting, we remain divided. Until the day we realise we must put our differences aside and stand together, as one - South Africa will never be safe. Stop giving the idiots who we've let lead this country the power to win every time! STAND UNITED.

I want us to stand together, not as women, not as men, not as black people, nor white or Indian – But as SOUTH AFRICANS that have grown tired of waiting for better days, but instead are going to stand up in UNITY to make the change we want to see in our beautiful land.
