And the fear sets in again

07 September 2018, 16:38

I know that I am not the only one that has gone through a lot but sometimes it helps to get it off your chest.

In a quiet leafy suburb of Cape Town, our lives were once again rocked, showing that you are basically not safe anywhere. Your mind reels from the shock of what you are hearing, your anger rises and your blood starts to boil, you are plunged into the cavernous pit once again. I've been a victim of crime on numerous occasions you try and pick yourself up, and carry on with your life, however you never truly forget that sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach.  Why must life be like this, why must we live in constant fear? Each hurdle you overcome and each day that you face you wonder when it will happen again, it’s not a question of if it has now become a question of when. Will it be you or will it be someone that is close to you.

*BOOM* - it happens again. I get home from work last night to meet a tearful niece and my shell shocked parents, the first words out of their mouth is “She was just robbed” right outside our front gate. She herself having just came from work. She was busy getting her bag and laptop out of the boot, parked in our driveway, when a car pulled up with three occupants in it. They asked her whether she knew where a specific road was, unfortunately she wasn’t able to help them. They drove off up the road which is a cul-d-sac and turned. My niece was locking the boot of her car when the stopped next to her again one of the occupants jumped out and pushed her to the ground grabbed her handbag and the assailant jumped back into the vehicle and sped off, luckily her car keys were in her hand, but managed to steal her phone, bank cards, etc. So we as a family plunged back into the fear and paranoia again.

Why do we have to live in constant fear? Why do we have to worry about our lives being threatened, our goods stolen or even worse losing your life, because of people that feel it is there right to plunder and pillage from others. Is this the way that we should be living our lives and is this how we truly think we should be living?

Basically your hands are tied, because if you injure or kill your assailant you are persecuted and they are seen as the victim.  Is this what our beautiful country and people have been reduced to. Constant murder, rapes, kidnapping and violence.  The fear of enjoying life in case it is shattered by one of these horrors, hiding in our houses like timid mice, too scared to move.

Some Brazil in South Africa

It would seem that there is only one party in South Africa capable of leading us out of the proverbial Amazon Rain Forest with its various indigenous tribes and natural pitfalls which in our context are self-interest, lack of inter-cultural respect, greed and then similarly to Brazil, crime and corruption. Read more...
