Dear Springboks

Before you take the field on Saturday to play in what will arguably be your ultimate test of endurance, strength, passion, bravery and determination. Before you take your place in the tunnel, butterflies fluttering in your stomach, teasing you with the nervous anticipation of running on to the biggest stage in world rugby …

I would like to say, thank you. Thank you for unifying a nation under one banner. Thank you for giving us a single voice. Thank you for the joy, the tears and the chance to stand together, embraced in the green and gold and shouting as one.

And when you take the field on Saturday, when you stand next to your brother singing our nations call, close your eyes. And through that darkness look behind you, you will see all of us behind you. Singing right there with you in one collective voice, resonating across the oceans. Our hearts emboldened by our unified strength. Tears of passion running down our cheeks.

As you make that tackle, know that the strength of a nation empowers you, when you get tired know that our belief in you will lift you up and guide you forward. When you score that try know that the job is not done, but you are one step closer.

And when that final whistle blows, no matter the result, know that we stand behind you. When your head is bowed, look up unto the sky and know that we will forever be proud of you. But most of all remember that …

Somewhere behind the athlete you have become, the hours of practice and the coaches who have pushed you … is a little boy who fell in love with the game and never looked back. Play for him.

Regards
