Did you see the actual ad, not the lousy composite clearly constructed to look racist?
I noticed that someone at our office was offended by this ad, and intrigued, I asked her to please show it to me. She showed me a composite image of a black girl, and a white girl, with an article title like: "black person washes with soap and turns white."
I asked her that surely that composite image was not the ad? She didn't know whether it was. She didn't even see the ad but thought it was racist.
I set off to find this ad. It is a racist world out there, and I really wanted to see what the Dove team managed to do this time. It wasn't easy to find, but I found it! It can be viewed here.
So looking at it, I cannot find any racism in it at all. The add does not show a black girl washing and turning white. No one is washing in the ad. If you think it does then you are sorely mistaken. This ad does not promote blackness as dirty and whiteness as clean. This ad is innocent. It merely shows the black girl changing form first. Then the white girl does it.
In a world full of racism, this is not a good example.
