How can South Africa stop the trillion Rand nuclear deal?

2016-09-22 12:21

We are facing a massive crisis - all of us, right now: the trillion (or multi-trillion) Rand deal that has reportedly already been concluded with Russia's Rosatom and done secretly by Zuma with Putin.

The bottom line is this: if this bribe-soaked deal goes ahead, it will literally bankrupt South Africa. Even if the plan comes in on budget (highly unlikely, seeing that Rosatom are notorious for being over-budget and over-time), it will cost us the same amount as South Africa's entire current annual tax revenue income - a trillion rands (and possibly more), with R100 billion having to be repaid EVERY  year over the next 20 years.

That means R100 000 000 000 less every year for education, healthcare, social grants, policing, roads and the rest. WE SIMPLY CANNOT AFFORD IT!

And we South Africans will be locked into overpriced, outdated technology, while the cost of renewables has now already dropped below the cost of conventionally-produced power. Dubai recently signed an 800 megawatt expansion of their photovoltaic plant on the city's outskirts. Projected user costs of this are estimated at under 5 US$ cents per kilowatt. Oil would have to cost $10 a barrel to match this. Germany and Scotland have already cancelled nuclear build programmes, while the US and Sweden have taken reactors offline.

And as for supplying night-time and back-up power, battery technology is advancing apace, while alternative electricity generation such as gas is far better able to supply consistent power, along with pumped-storage schemes such as Ingula.

Basically, the nuclear deal has NOT been done to secure our future in the best, most cost-effective way. It has been done to make Zuma, the Guptas and other top ANC head-honchos filthy rich via bribes and tenders. Then they will disappear off the scene, leaving us younger South Africans to carry an UNSUSTAINABLE, UNBEARABLE FINANCIAL LOAD FOR THE NEXT TWO DECADES AT LEAST.

Already a R171 000 000 contract for the 'Nuclear New Build Programme Management System' has been issued, (apparently irregularly) to the son of Vivian Reddy, a long-time pal of Zuma's. This is just the START of the Great Eskom Robbery.

How can we stop this foul, filthy, greed-ridden plan from going ahead? I'm not sure, but one definite key will be to get rid of Zuma and his cohorts like Tina Joemat-Petterson and Lynne Browne. Kick 'em out. But even bettter will be to kick the entire ANC out as the ruling party.

A great start has been made with the municipal elections. Now our only chance to save ourselves from a crushing debt burden - while the Zuptas retire filthy-rich - will come in 2019. The DA has said it will do everything in its power to stop this clearly ridiculous deal from going ahead. Roll on 2019.
