Is nobody willing to do the right thing anymore?

12 October 2017, 08:31

Every sport has a certain unwritten rule that is mostly referred to as a gentlemen’s code. There are certain boundaries that you are not supposed to cross in your endeavour to win.

This trait is admired by those who truly reflect it. You do not need to step on your opponent’s neck to win. You also do not need to rub your successes in the face of your enemy. It is unsportsman like conduct and it is not to be tolerated.

Winners exude this naturally. It is second nature to them. They know that they have what it takes to win and they do not have to take short cuts to get there. The journey is the moment, not the achievement.

There are only two instances in recorded history which bare an exception to this rule and those are said to be love and war. Logic would have it then that all else should ascribe. It’s a tricky thing trying to apply logic to this here modern day South Africa.

There is nothing that I can say makes sense to me. I mean we have people eating people. We have a president stealing from people and erecting statues in his own honor. We have hospitals killing people. We auditors stealing from people. Hijackings, rapes and burglaries happen almost at the rhythm of a beating South African drum.

It breaks my heart to know that as I write these words, somewhere in our beautiful land, one of these crimes is being committed against an innocent human being. God bless South Africa. Our police officers will not protect us. I don’t know what it would take for them to start doing their job. Their minister is always busy on Twitter saying crude words.

If the whole nation is paying attention to the words that you use, shouldn’t you at the very least mind your language? Maybe it’s just me but I really find it hard to pay attention to someone who is prone to using coarse words. They are just too hard on the ear. If you do your job you don’t have to talk tough. Action speaks louder than words.

My primary school English teacher used to say; “Empty vessels make the most noise.” It was a gimmick to get us to shut up of course and we did, because we wanted to be considered smart. If only for a little while. She was a very smart elegant lady with a penchant for pronunciation. You just had to pronounce every single syllable to perfection in her class.

She had a passion for her job. She did her job. Some people just aim to pitch up at their places of work and call it a day. They are all so ready to tell you that whatever it is that you seek assistance with is not their job and that you should contact so and so from that department.

Why are we then so surprised that our country has turned out to be what it is today? Nobody is willing to do the right thing until it becomes fashionable. The Bank of Baroda now is stuck with the Guptas because they waited till too late to do the right thing. Everybody knows the Guptas are corrupt but they wanted to milk that cow for what it’s worth. Man have they got their buckets full now.
