SA students faces accommodation crisis at universities

13 July 2017, 15:33

Students in South Africa are facing accommodation crisis and the universities seems not finding the way out of this, meanwhile the students are not safe staying off campus.

Many institutions have now reached student accommodation crisis levels in the country. Accommodation crisis is mostly affecting students who are coming from far provinces and all over the world.

The limitation of accommodation in universities results to students being unsecured, unsafe, victimized and all sorts of crime related. Many students find it difficult to further their studies because of the shortage of accommodation in universities, hence some of them can’t afford to pay the accommodation on their own.

The universities in South Africa, mostly the public institutions accommodates huge number of students while knowing that they cannot afford to accommodate them in their residences. Universities should taking full responsibilities of their students, and ensuring that students are safe at all times.

In addition, students who are suffering from this crisis are rental over-charged. This mostly results to students changing their lives and turns into prostitution and some to criminals in order get the money to pay rent. Yes there are the students who cannot copy rather to tolerate studying where there’s overcrowded, but such students are mostly like to be rare to find especially in public institutions, perhaps in private institutions there are.

I am unashamedly convinced that this is one of the primary challenge that causes poor performance to most students in the country. Doesn’t matter if the student is academically funded or not, the truth of the matter is when the student is not safe or lack accommodation, obviously the student won’t be able to excel in his or her studies. It essential that universities builds enough residences for their students to ensure safety of their customers.

In a number of occasion students are reported victimized and abused in different institutions throughout the country. Inasmuch as we don’t want our image as a country to be tarnished, then some changes has to be done to make sure that it doesn’t happen again. All university should admit a specific number of students that which can be accommodated without delay. University accommodation should be a matter of choice to relocate rather than university having insufficient residence for its students.

Now because this challenge is perpetuating itself almost every year. Let the university compensate any student who will experience such abuse because of the shortage of accommodation. Each and every student deserves to be protected.  To this end, I argue the universities in South Africa to build enough residences or rather partnership with other accommodation accompanies across the country to ensure the safety of our students.
