Whilst we struggle to touch terra firma from the euphoria of the Rugby World Cup, I cannot help but re-postulate a ‘theory’ that I have held for a long time. But let me first mention some notable South African athletes.

Pugilist connoisseurs had Gerrie Coetzee, tennis had Johan Kriek, cricket has Dale Steyn, running had Frith van der Merwe, golf has Louis Oosthuizen and swimming had Ryk Neethling. You will see a common thread of white folk but more specifically, that of Afrikaans folk.

Let’s check in with that euphoria again. Stars like Siya Kolisi, Bongi Mbonambi and Makazole Mapimpi have enhanced the grit within the Springbok team. Another common thread but also an innate ability and persistence to excel in what was previously regarded as a white-dominated sport. Most people would argue that it was an Afrikaans dominated sport.

Now to the beautiful game. No such crossover here. Sure, we have our exceptions but they are too few and far between. What would be the state of South African football if Afrikaners were to take a keener interest in the sport? After all, it seems that they always emerge from a sporting talent pool, ready to take on the world. Can you imagine a healthy mixture of black and white soccer stars representing South Africa? Bring on Afcon.

Kuban Chetty, Durban
