The military police is trained in all legal aspects as the police including their duties and responsibilities and would in my opnion be better to deploy.
These soldiers are trained in the use of pistols and machine guns and the law referring to minimun use of force, criminal procedure act, making of arrest, law of evidence, taking finger prints, conducting searches and even opening case dockets which in my opinion would help the saps more efficiently operationally than other departments in the SANDF.
As an ex military police official I know that the military police is capable of conducting themselves accordingly and would be more beneficial than sending in infantry. The military police also have vehicles similar to the SAPS including blue lights.
It makes no sense to send in combat trained soldiers without any knowledge of criminal law and procedures to work amongst civilians.
I do believe that there might be a shortage of military police officals depending on the numbers needed but then the military police must play the leading roles with other SANDF units serving as support to ensure legal conduct in communities and to limit infringement of rights.
