Water savings tips: 'Do dishes only when necessary'

2016-12-02 10:11

The City of Cape Town said on Thursday that residents of the city had cut down on water usage but still urged people to use less

From November 14 to 21, between 870 and 890 million litres of water was used daily but the City said it was pushing for less than 800 million litres to be used daily.

"According to the City's calculations, if residents are able to ensure that their water consumption over the coming summer months does not exceed their consumption over winter, we will be able to meet this target."

Instead of using a shower or a bath tub full of water, I use a washing basin.

I strongly suggest the City cuts the water off at all beach showers and taps. Such a lot of water is wasted this way and it really is not necessary to wash off sea water from the body every time you have a dip. I will also take more notice of water restrictions if this is given some attention. Every day during summer thousands and thousands of people use a massive amount of potable water at the beaches.

A few things we do to save water (and money!):

We reuse grey water. Collect it in buckets in the shower and then water the garden. You can collect up to 20 liters in one shower (if you take a quick shower).

Also do dishes only when necessary and reuse that water as well. There are YouTube videos detailing how to modify your outlet to fit a hose for this.

Put bricks in the toilet's reservoir and only flush when absolutely necessary. We are also considering modifying our plumbing, so we can flush the toilets using grey water.

Only use your washing machine when you have a full load and again, only when you really have to. Reuse the water.

Buy a plastic basin to put in the kitchen sink and a big plastic watering can.  Catch all water, even when you wash your hands!  Use the dishwater in the garden.

1. Bucket in shower - all cold water saved and used on plants when plants need this and only 1 minute in shower 2. Water used to rinse vegetable or fruit collected in container for later watering purposes 3. Shower as often as possible in gym, not at home- also very brief 4. Only use of watering can, no hosepipe.

It simple just reduce the pressure of water in you tap on your water meter.

The second one you have to own a water tank on a big corntainer to fill in the rainwater for other needs such as eg; irrigation, washing car and act
