The ever increasing amount of violent acts in schools is one epidemic that must not be overlooked by parents, teachers, the department of education and society as a whole.

This speaks to teachers being attacked by learners and learners who gruesomely injure others.

The highest law of our land being the Constitution, speaks to everyone having the right to basic education.

It is however assumed and expected that we take the responsibility to ensure that we work hand-in-hand with the government to ensure safety in our schools.

On a daily basis, one comes across the news of learners who lose their lives at the hands of other learners, teachers or members of society.

In addition to that, many educational institutions fall short of having the bare minimum resources to ensure that learners and teachers are safe during school hours.

We can be the type of society that expects the Department of Education to take on this task or we can work together in coming up with practical and accessible means of procuring safety at schools, particularly those situated in areas where ambulances and the SAPS find it challenging to attend to in time.

The ruling made by Judge President Selby Mbenenge, that allows for undocumented students to not be excluded from schools is a progressive step to reaching the type of education system our country should have.

The question of safety still remains a major concern: are our children and teachers safe during school hours?
