What are you going to do Mmusi Maimane?

08 May 2018, 13:05

It is shocking, but really not surprising, that senior members of the DA have shared fake claims of ethical transgressions by Cape Town Mayor, Patricia De Lille on social media.

This disgusting hounding of De Lille has already done irreparable damage to the DA. Of course, the esteemed leaders of the DA refuse to see the wood for the trees, so arrogant and self-serving have they become. I’m only one person but, like us all, have many friends, colleagues and acquaintances who care and worry about our city and country, and not a single one is impressed by the DA’s campaign to oust De Lille.

The DA has no specific charges against De Lille and have alleged she is power hungry.  That’s as infantile as a schoolchild not wanting to play with another child because someone else said something about someone else who said they don’t like the other child.

Not only have the DA resorted to disrespecting its own constitution by inserting a purpose built “Get Rid of De Lille Clause” into it, they have now resorted to fabricating, and distributing, evidence against her. If this is what they do now against one of it's leading members? What are they likely to do in future to you and me should they take a disliking to us?

Some blindly loyal, unquestioning DA fans believe the DA’s arrogance is warranted because the ANC was arrogant first and the DA senses imminent power?  Again, a naive, childish reaction. A pity the DA sees it as a power struggle and not an effort to serve South Africa better than the ANC. Either way, if the DA does not come to its collective senses, it will not only not win power on a national platform, it will lose power in the cities and province in which it has been elected to serve the people.

The DA has held itself aloft as a paragon of political and ethical virtue, as an honest alternative to a corrupt-to-the-core ANC and if they are going to judge others and set themselves up as the perfect role model, they had damn well better be clean as a whistle. Unfortunately for South Africa, the DA’s whistle is as gobby, scummy and smelly as the ANC’s. The DA has failed as the go-to honest and moral alternative.

The DA completely fluffed the Cape Town water crisis, in a frenzy of king-of-the-castle self-servitude, negating any claim to being better city/town/village administrators than the ANC. The DA has made extremely questionable payments of millions to Tony Leon’s communications company, so has lost all moral authority over Zupta state capture. Now they are hounding Patricia De Lille and inventing ‘evidence’ like the ANC hounded and invented evidence against Barbara Hogan and Pravin Gordhan among others.

All this because Patricia De Lille is alleged to be power hungry? What does that say about those who wish to oust her and usurp that power?

What I would like to ask Mmusi Maimane is, if this is the extent to which you will attack someone who has, apparently, done nothing other than clash with power-hungry members within the DA, what are you going to do about Mike Waters and Bronwyn Engelbrecht for posting fake allegations against De Lille to social media and bringing your party into disrepute? Or does bringing your party into disrepute not matter anymore as long as you are one of the privileged elite within the party for the privileged elite?

What would you think, feel and do, if some of your own members posted fictitious allegations about yourself on social media? If you are an honest, just and transparent leader, you will take whatever actions against Waters and Engelbrecht for their transgressions against De Lille as you would if they had done the same to you personally. Anything less will be to expose and confirm you and your imploding party for the hypocrites you appear to be.
