Johannesburg - Seventeen people were arrested in Khutsong on Tuesday for drug-related offences and possession of counterfeit cigarettes, said Gauteng police.
The suspects, aged between 20 and 40, were caught in a crime operation after violence in the area at the weekend, said Brigadier Neville Malila.
"A substantial amount of drugs, in the form of dagga and nyaope, were confiscated during the operation," he said.
The 17 would appear in the Khutsong Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
Six deaths
Six people accused of gangsterism were burnt to death in the township at the weekend. No arrests have been made and police were still investigating.
The deaths came after about 400 men, believed to be Khutsong residents, held a meeting to discuss gangsterism on Sunday.
Malila said the situation in the area was under control on Tuesday.
"No violent activities were reported during the last 36 hours. Police are still maintaining a high visibility in the area," he said.
He urged community members with any information that might help in the investigation to contact the police.
