19 held in KZN protest after cop shot to stay in custody

KwaZulu-Natal – Nineteen people arrested following a violent protest in Inanda on Monday have been remanded in custody after appearing in the Ntuzuma Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

The group was apprehended following unrest along the M25 near Bhambayi Road that morning, which saw the road blockaded with burning rubble and tyres. A bus was set alight.

A metro police officer was also shot in the mouth and arm during the protest, said police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane.

"Charges of attempted murder, malicious damage [to] property and public violence were opened at Inanda police station for investigation. A total of 19 suspects were arrested and charged with public violence," Zwane said.

He was unable to give details on the metro police officer's condition.

In a separate protest in Keats Drift, near Msinga, about 150 protesters barricaded a road with burning tyres and rocks on Tuesday night.

"Ten suspects aged between 19 and 37 – all women – were arrested for public violence. No injuries were reported," he said.

They are expected in the Msinga Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
