"All the way through ancient civilisations, the primary thing that I found was that [in] every single tradition from around the world, people were visited by these 'people from the sky'," Wayne Herschel, author of The Hidden Records and the Cosmic Tree told News24.
He said that ancient aliens travelled to Earth and passed on knowledge to civilisations that enabled the construction of megalithic structures.
"They made contact with the kings - their leaders - and gave a whole lot of information on what they can do with their lives. And it seems every single one chose to make these teachings and writing sacred for their elite people only, whereas the commoner and poor and the enslaved were restricted from it."
This theory has not found support among mainstream researchers who regard it as junk science, but they concede that there are many puzzles about the construction of ancient in many parts of the world, including Sacsayhuamán (Falcon's head) near the city of Cusco, Peru.
Göbekli Tepe in Turkey has been described as the most ancient temple, dated at about 11 000 years old. German scientists working on the site for 13 years have not found any tools that could have been used to build the huge structures.
The walled complex of Sacsayhuamán was the former capital of the Inca empire and was built of large polished dry-stone walls, each boulder carefully cut to fit together tightly without mortar.
"It's amazing all the weight of the stones... It's difficult definitely for any human to move, even in groups. In some stones we see there are some marks that it seems that it was dissolved," said Jorge Luis Delgado Mamani who has studied the stones for a number of years.
According to Herschel, modern wars are a strategy to continue the secret traditions passed down from ancient times.
"I still think it's been fought, the wars today, of groups of people that are very powerful, that believe that they are only entitled to those sacred truths about creation, about the bloodline."
These ideas were first suggested by Zecharia Sitchin who wrote The Twelfth Planet and Erich von Däniken, author of Chariots of the Gods?
The hypothesis suggests that the ancient structures could not have been built without help from extraterrestrials that left the planet after a great cataclysm.
"If you look at the way they've built... there's an advanced race that is lost, an advanced time. And these really seriously ruined remains; something has really happened: A grand earthquake, flood, whatever it is. It seems quite likely.
"What we've got left is their raw foundations; all the technology is lost. I bet you some pieces of technology have been found and the elite people around the world have gone and sought after them and collected them," he said.
Herschel said that modern elites wanted to prevent the public from having knowledge about their ancient heritage in order to control the population.
"They don't want the public to know about our ancient past because then it opens up the knowledge that... all this stuff that brings people together, creates peace, unity - it's not profitable."
He disputes Sitchin's theory that the aliens reside on Planet Nibiru.
This theory suggests that the planet has an orbital period of 3 600 years, allowing extraterrestrials to visit Earth when their planet is close.
"This is because of the cataclysmic event that took place in the solar system. Whatever caused the asteroid belt was planetary collisions, I agree with Sitchin's story thus far, and caused the biblical flood - when something hit the ocean and caused every country in the northern hemisphere to flood," said Herschel.
