Atheism is a quasi-religion

I am not a person that is an expert on religion – it does not interest me but reading MyNews 24 you are bombarded ad nauseam with the battle between atheists and Christians where the Christians are hopelessly outscored when it comes to the number of insults hurled to and fro.

There is as a result no doubt in my mind that Christians like me must be the stupidest people alive.

I also came to the conclusion that atheism must be a belief system. Why else are some atheists so hell-bent on spreading the atheist gospel? I started to believe that MyNews 24 is a Hoekie for Eensame Atheists where atheists seek to have their beliefs validated by other atheists.

I asked myself why this is so. Is this not similar to our "Omgee Groepie” at Church? It is.

I have also learned a new word here from an atheist - "proselytising".  I used to say that one of the hallmarks of a religious system is that they have evangelists. I have since learned that the correct word is proselytising. (That is how little I know about religion. But being ignorant about a subject does not entail that you are a complete idiot – even though you are a Christian, Mr Wolf.)

I shall endeavour to illustrate the point that religion is the causal nexus for atheism and that atheism cannot exist without theism. I will go so far as to say that atheism is a quasi-religion.

The First Church of Atheism states on its website:

“Donations are accepted but not expected. If we can raise enough money we can buy an actual church!”

I laughed when I read it and thought that this must be tithing atheist style.

They say: “The First Church of Atheism is formed around the belief that the mysteries of life can be explained through science and reason. We aim to provide a place for atheists to become ordained, for free, as well as a hub for atheists to find ministers to perform their ceremonies. This is our doctrine:

‘Nothing exists besides natural phenomena. Thought is merely a function of those natural phenomena. Death is complete, and irreversible. We have faith solely in humankind, nature, and the facts of science.’”

To me atheism is the flip side of the coin that says that God does indeed exist.

In disputing that atheism is a belief system an atheists put his view to me as follows: "If religion didn't exist, we humans would all be "atheist" or rather, have no belief in a deity."

As far as I know there is no society that believes that Mars is hollow and believes in intelligent life in Middle Mars. That being the case we are (hopefully) all people that do not believe in life in Middle Mars but we do not have to call ourselves Middle Mars Life Denialists and write essays and books about it like we do in the instance of atheism.

The moment we start writing Middle Mars Life Denialists’ books it begins to escalate to a belief system.

Some atheists may no doubt argue that atheism has no system, no doctrine. Assuming that this is true (which I do not believe in the light of the above) one has to ask whether  those elements are really necessary to constitute a "belief system"?

I say they are not.

I believe that once it becomes necessary for you to give a label or name tag to what you believe you have escalated it to a belief system. Belief systems are in part concerned with the existence or non-existence of certain conceptual entities. To insist that some entity does not exist implies an awareness of others who believe it does indeed exist.

I would say that the commitment that we see here on MyNews24 by some  atheists to what they believe (or not believe) makes it a belief system. To them it is a way of life. Their nomes de plume  clearly indicate that they are atheists. When commenting about speeding one atheist took a cheap shot at religion; another remarked that a person who made a stupid remark on an artical with political content must be a Christian. Examples abandon. It seems some atheists are obsessed with their beliefs to the extent that they are nothing else but annoying bigots and zealots here on MyNews24.

Atheism is not just denial of a deity, it is much more – sometimes it is militant, most often it is insulting towards those who do not share the same views. The militant ones have a passionate belief in atheism and like to stereotype like a certain athist that told us that we Christians have a low self-esteem that is why we believe in God. (That we are stupid was not even debatable.)

Don’t tell me not all atheists are like that, I will agree. I will point out, however, that it is not required in a belief system that everybody thinks the same. (Example in Christianity:  I am a Christian that believes in evolution. Lots of Christians do not.)

I believe that atheism, like Islam currently, is also concerned with  politics. In politics, secular belief systems, especially, have the character that the world must be changed in order to achieve the perfect state – a secular state. Why else do secular humanists want a secular state if atheism is not a belief system?

I conclude that we deal with much more than a denial of something here and that atheism, shorn of all its semantics is in my opinion a belief system akin to religion and if you look at the nature of the beast you see nothing but a quasi-religious belief.
