Batten down the hatches: Winter weather gets wild

Cape Town – Heavy rains and strong winds continued to batter Cape Town on Thursday with the SA Weather Service (Saws) warning that flooding can be expected in certain areas.

The service also warned of gale force winds of 70-80km/h between Cape Agulhas and Port Alfred and waves of up to 7m expected in places between Cape Point and Cannon Rocks.

“Heavy rain leading to localised flooding is expected in the Cape Metropole, Overberg and western parts of the Cape Winelands in the morning,” the weather service said.

Residents in Sneeuberg, Winterberg and the southern Drakensberg regions were also told they can expect disruptive snowfalls on Thursday evening.

Meteorologist Lebogang Mashile told News24 that the rain and snow would continue into Friday.

She said that disruptive snowfalls meant that roads in the affected areas might not be accessible on Friday.

Mashile said the rain will slow down on Friday but that very cold conditions can be expected going into the weekend.
