Durban - A 10-year-old boy survived a horror road accident which claimed the life of his father on the R61 near Port Edward on Sunday night.
KZN EMS spokesperson Robert McKenzie said that the boy, who was in a serious condition, had been found near the mangled wreckage of a car which had left the road and rolled down an embankment.
His father was declared dead at the scene.
“EMS paramedics responded to an emergency call before midnight and arrived at the scene to find that a single vehicle had left the road. It is a busy arterial route between the Eastern Cape and KZN and it is unclear as to what happened at this stage,” he said.
“Paramedics had to walk down an embankment to get to the vehicle which had etched a line in the brush nearly 50 meters from where we believe it left the road.”
McKenzie said that a man in his fifties had died before medics had arrived.
“Sadly there was nothing we could do for the man who had sustained fatal injuries. The car had come to rest at the foot of gully on its side so from the damage we assume that it rolled more than once.”
“The child had sustained serious injuries and was stabilised there before he was carried to a waiting ambulance and transported to a hospital nearby for further medical care,” he said.
