Johannesburg - An 11-year-old boy drowned at Muizenberg Beach in Cape Town on Tuesday, the National Sea Rescue Institute said.
The child was at the beach with friends, NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said.
"It is suspected that the child may have been under water for an extensive period of time while his friends attempted to raise the alarm.
"The child may have been submerged in water for at least 45 minutes," he said.
The boy was brought to shore but paramedics were unable to resuscitate him. He was declared dead on the scene.
Police were trying to locate the boy's family, said Lambinon.
