Johannesburg - An act of bravery ended in double tragedy in Randburg, Johannesburg, on Tuesday when a six-year-old boy and a man drowned in a swimming pool at the boy's house.
ER24 paramedics said a bystander informed them that the child had been playing outside when he a fell into the pool.
The man, who was working at the house, jumped in and tried to save the child, said ER24 spokesperson Pieter Rossouw.
"He could not swim and became unconscious in the water," he said.
He was declared dead on the scene.
The child was transported privately to Mediclinic Sandton, but was also declared dead on arrival at the hospital.
Rossouw called on people to be cautious around pools and said children should never be left unattended near water.
"You should never jump in after someone who might be drowning. Rather use a rope, stick or [floating] device to help," he said.
