China Mall fire contained

Johannesburg - Firefighters are still putting out fire at China Mall in Crown Mines, just outside central Johannesburg, emergency services said on Saturday.

"Although there is still fire in the building, the fire has been contained to one of the buildings," ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson told Sapa just after 11:00.

She said firefighters had brought in cranes and would "attack the fire from the top".

"Paramedics on the scene explained that when they first arrived at the fire, there was quite a show, as it seemed that one of the buildings contained fireworks."

The fire, which started around 08:00 on Saturday morning, has seen part of the M1 freeway from the Booysens area covered in heavy grey smoke.

A large number of motorists stopped to look at the fire and take pictures.

No one was injured in the blaze as people from the neighbouring buildings had been evacuated.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
