DA: Publicise probe into fire chief

Johannesburg - The Gauteng government must make public a PriceWaterhouseCoopers report on corruption allegations against the suspended Johannesburg fire chief, the DA said on Thursday.

"The public have the right to know what is in this report," Democratic Alliance spokesperson Jack Bloom said in a statement.

"It appears that she receives high-level political protection that may well continue."

The City of Joburg said on Wednesday that emergency services chief Audrey Gule had been suspended pending the outcome of disciplinary proceedings against her.

Gule, who was appointed in 2004, has been accused of fraud and corruption and went on sick leave last month.

One of the allegations against her is that she allegedly pocketed R200 000 of city funds, and allegedly failed to renew the contracts of three long-serving finance department officials who had discovered this.

City spokesperson Gabu Tugwana said PriceWaterhouseCoopers presented its final report on a probe into the allegations to the city six weeks ago.

"The case is running, it is being examined and an inquiry is running at full steam."
