Pretoria - One of the latest rumours to surface over the weekend following the fatal shooting of Reeva Steenkamp at her boyfriend, Oscar Pistorius’s home, was that the couple were fighting over an SMS she had received.
It was reported that Steenkamp had received an SMS from Springbok rugby player Francois Hougaard, stated Die Burger.
Hougaard could not be reached for comment but he had earlier released a statement saying he was not in any way involved with the shooting.
Meanwhile, The Mirror newspaper reported on Saturday that Hougaard was a close friend of both Pistorius and Steenkamp.
He had also dated Steenkamp before she started going out with Pistorius and had continued to be in a “close friendship” with Hougaard.
Hougaard pulled out of a game for the Vodacom Bulls on Friday.
In a twist, Nelson Mandela’s personal assisstant Zelda la Grange tweeted after the shooting: “Have you heard ¬rumours about a rugby player alleged to be involved somehow? We all have.”
The tweet was retweeted by many journalists.
