Girl gangs terrorise Cape Flats

Cape Town - The Cape Flats have always been home to vicious gangs, but lately residents have complained of a different kind of gangster – young women belonging to violent girl gangs.

The Daily Voice reported that the female gangsters were being accused of brutal stabbings in attacks on members of other female gangs.

The girl gangs were affiliated with gangs formed by their boyfriends.

The best known female gangs were called the Voora Babes and the Vatos Babes and within these gangs were sub-groups as well.

It was reported that there had been an increase in incidents involving girl gangs in Khayelitsha.

Teenaged girls were also used to courier drugs or hide weapons.

On Monday, a 16-year-old girl was stabbed by a group of young women as she returned from church.

One girl told reporters that she had joined a gang as she no longer felt safe and needed protection from other gangs.

Residents say school grounds were being turned into battlefields and were concerned about the rise in violence.
