Cape Town - Gunshots and screaming could be heard on the streets of Manenberg on the Cape Flats late into Monday night, a resident and community forum spokesperson Rugshanda Pascoe said on Tuesday.
"Between 23:00 and 23:45 last night we could still hear shooting. We could hear people screaming," Pascoe told News24.
"It is very fearful to walk in Manenberg. You can't walk alone... [the streets] are so quiet."
She said the gangs turned their guns on police on Monday evening.
Western Cape police could not be immediately reached for comment.
Community members told News24 last week that gunfire had broken out on Friday night when a peace deal between the Americans and the Hard Livings gang faltered after a gambling game went foul.
Abubakr Lewis, one of the leaders of the Manenberg community forum involved in planning a protest against gang violence, was shot in the leg at a forum meeting on Monday before the protest could take place.
Pascoe said Lewis was discharged from hospital on Monday evening, however he still needed to go to another hospital to have the bullet removed from his leg.
She said the community would hold a meeting at 15:00 on Tuesday to discuss a way forward for residents.
Pascoe said it was a good thing that it was school holidays because two primary schools and a high school were in the firing line of the gangs.
"In one way it's good for us that it's holiday and we can keep the children inside but we also don't want to keep them cooped up.
"If there was school today, it would mean parents would have to go to work late so that they could make sure their children are safe."
Pascoe said the children from schools that were caught in the crossfire of the gang violence last year and in 2013 were still traumatised.
"Those children are still overcoming what happened. Being put in that situation now again, I pray for the mothers."
