Cape Town - Interpol has been asked to help search for a South African chef who is believed to be missing in Ireland.
Cape Town resident Johan van Wyk, 30, flew to Dublin in November last year. His family’s last contact with him was a postcard for Christmas, reported the Cape Argus.
He was supposed to fly back to South Africa on 13 February, said Dessie Rechner from charity organisation Pink Ladies, a group that helps find missing people.
“What’s suspicious is he never cancelled or changed his flight. His tourist visa has since expired, so wherever he is now he is there illegally,” she said. “His family has been trying to contact him since last year without any success. They are now worried.”
A police spokesperson said a missing person’s report had been filed and that Interpol were looking into the matter in Dublin.
Rechner said Van Wyk had previously worked as a chef aboard ships.
“We are considering that he might be travelling around Europe or working aboard a ship but what’s worrying is there’s no activity in his bank account. Hopefully Dublin Ireland Interpol can help locate him if he is still in Ireland, so his family can know he is OK,” said Rechner.
