Man critical after freak truck crash

Cape Town – A driver is in a serious condition after a 24-ton barge fell off a truck and crushed his bakkie on the N1 in Cape Town, emergency services said on Tuesday.

The truck had collided with a bridge at around 14:40.

“The container caught on the fly-over bridge and was pushed off the trailer. Unfortunately it came to land on top of the bakkie,” ER24’s Christo Venter told News24.

Rescuers had to use the jaws of life to free the driver of the bakkie,  who'd been trapped in the cabin.

He was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The City of Cape Town's traffic spokesperson, Richard Coleman, told News24 all roads linking to Table Bay Boulevard from Cape Town CBD are closed.

"We have a crane on the scene. We're going to try to move it to the side of the road to open two lanes until after the peak," Coleman said.

Traffic services advise using Nelson Mandela Boulevard.
This has resulted in the N2 also being backed up
