Johannesburg - AfriForum Youth on Thursday laid a charge of hate speech against a Johannesburg student for singing an altered version of the outlawed "shoot the boer" song.
The charge was against Wits University student council member Tokelo Nhlapo for singing "dubula lekgoa" which means "shoot the white".
AfriForum Youth chairperson Charl Oberholzer said it was sung at the university on October 14 ahead of a lecture by recently suspended ANC Youth League president Julius Malema.
"Inciting students to sing hate songs is a sign of weak leadership," Oberholzer said in a statement on Thursday.
"By singing this song, the students expressed their hate for white people."
He said the university had launched an investigation into the matter but no findings had been released yet. The university could not be immediately reached for comment.
A hearing date was expected to be set down by the Johannesburg Equality Court, said Oberholzer.
