Man gets life sentence for Yangon hotel bombing in 2013

Yangon - A district court in Myanmar on Friday sentenced a man to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of a bomb attack in 2013 in a luxury hotel in Yangon that wounded an American tourist.

Saw Myint Lwin was convicted of bombing the Trader Hotel, now known as the Sule Shangrila, in central Yangon in October 2013. He can appeal against the sentence.

Two other suspects arrested for the bombing were unconditionally released by the court.

Last year, Saw Myint Lwin was sentenced to 20 years in prison for planting a bomb in a restaurant in Yangon on the same day.

Myanmar was hit by a series of explosions and attempted bombings in late 2013, including a bomb attack on a hotel that killed two people and wounded one in the town of Taungoo, 55 kilometres from the capital, Naypyitaw.

In January, a court sentenced to death Saw Tun Tun, who had confessed to planting the bomb.

Police told dpa that the two, Saw Tun Tun and Saw Myint Lwin confessed to planting the bombs after being paid by Saw Htowah, a former member of the rebel Karen National Union.

However, the mastermind of the series of explosions and attempted bombings is still at large, police said.
