Cape Town - It was crucial for African universities to generate solutions for the continent's unique challenges, Stellenbosch University Rector Russel Botman said on Wednesday.
He was announcing the launch of the university's HOPE Project, which he described as an array of "visionary initiatives".
"Using our strengths and our partnerships with other African universities, we hope both to enhance our position as a relevant university in the 21st century and improve the lives of citizens across the continent," he said.
The project aimed to build on the university's "science for society" approach, using world-class research and interaction to bring about change in communities.
The initiatives would concentrate on poverty eradication, human dignity and health, democracy and human rights, peace and security, and a sustainable environment and competitive industry.
"Whether it is a renewable energy supply for the region, food security in southern Africa, conflict resolution and leadership or rural healthcare and development, we are looking to throw our weight behind the country and the continent's most pressing needs," Botman said.
