More protesters arrested in North West

Johannesburg - Four more people were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly vandalising foreign-owned businesses in Bapong, North West police said.

The four allegedly damaged shops belonging to Chinese and Pakistani nationals on Monday, Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said.

Thirty-six protesters had been arrested on Monday after protesting residents blocked the main road between Sun City and Pretoria over the weekend.

A number of these protesters would face charges of malicious damage to property and public violence, Ngubane said.

Bapong residents were protesting against Lonmin employment policies at its Marikana mine.

The community wanted the company to employ local workers, offer bursaries to schoolchildren and help develop the town.

Lonmin spokesperson Barnard Mokwena said in a statement, on Sunday, that the mine's management was engaging with community representatives.

Ten vehicles, including police cars and trucks belonging to the mine were damaged on Monday.

"We will not be taking police cars into the area again, we will rather use armoured riot vehicles," Ngubane said.
