Murder-accused Atlantis dad's trial postponed

Cape Town - A man accused of killing his son and trying to kill his wife appeared in the Western Cape High Court on Monday.

John Hendricks appeared in the dock for a pre-trial conference. The matter was postponed for a week, until Monday.

The State alleges that Hendricks shouted at his 2-year-old son Theopolus Groepies for soiling his nappy and repeatedly threw him to the ground, in Atlantis, on 3 March 2011.

He put the motionless boy to bed. His mother Roxanne Groepies returned home from work the following day and found him in bed, convulsing.

He was taken to hospital and died on 16 March.

Hendricks also faces charges of assault, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, attempted murder, and kidnapping.

These charges relate to offences he allegedly committed against his wife between March 2011 and February 2013.

The State alleges he knocked Groepies to the floor and kicked her on December 2012.

In the first weekend of February 2013, he allegedly confronted Groepies about a friend while she was a few months pregnant, and held her against her will.

He allegedly hit her with objects including a wooden broom and a belt, and stabbed her with a knife.
