Museeuw injured in accident

Brussels - Belgian cyclist Johan Museeuw was facing an end to his career following a motorbike accident which left him with multiple fractures, Belgian newspapers said on Monday.

Head injuries he sustained were also causing concern, the reports said.

The 34 year old Museeuw underwent emergency hospital treatment after his motorbike was hit by a car near Ostende on Sunday, the Belga news agency said.

Museeuw, the winner of this year's Paris to Roubaix classic, was riding his Harley-Davidson along with his wife and son when the accident happened.

He was rushed to hospital by helicopter with a broken collar-bone and fractured knee as well as concussion. His wife and son emerged unscathed from the crash.

A hospital spokesman said that Museeuw had a successful operation on his left leg overnight, but that a brain scan had revealed that he had a hemorrhage which was worsening.

The Belgian had made an Olympic gold medal in Sydney in September his main aim of the year, but the crash rules him out of that and threatens to end his career, press reports said.

"It's true that Johan has a morale way above the ordinary. He proved it by winning Paris-Roubaix this year two years after badly injuring his left knee," said the cyclist's manager Patrick Lefevre.

"But this time it looks worse and you have to remember that Johan is after all 34 years old," he added. - Sapa-AFP
