Potchefstroom - Over 200 tons of gold concentrate was found inside a granite factory in Potchefstroom, in the North West, the Hawks said on Tuesday.
Spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said the discovery was made during a Hawks operation on Monday.
"Although no one has been arrested as yet, two known suspects are believed to be behind this illicit trade and the Hawks are pursuing them," he said.
"The origin of the concentrate is also known but cannot be revealed due to the sensitivity of the investigation. The value of the gold concentrate has not yet been determined but it is suspected to be worth millions of rands."
Acting Hawks head, Major General Mthandazo Ntlemeza, said the operation and the discovery was another breakthrough into illegal mining syndicates.
“While the investigation is still ongoing, we are
continuously making serious inroads to unearth more syndicates especially the
kingpins who benefit out of the proceeds of illicit activities. No stone
will be left unturned in our relentless efforts to protect our country’s
economy,” Ntlemeza said.
