Port Elizabeth - A total of 2 065 firearms were destroyed in Port Elizabeth on Saturday morning, Eastern Cape police said.
"At least 848 of these have been voluntarily surrendered. The other 1 217 were confiscated by the state and had been used in criminal activities," said Lieutenant-Colonel Sibongile Soci.
The firearms included rifles, shotguns and handguns.
Nearly 40 000 firearms have been destroyed by police in the province since 2004, said Soci.
