Premier's ex facing speeding charges

Hazyview - The former wife of Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza is scheduled to appear in the Hazyview Magistrate's Court on Tuesday on charges of reckless and negligent driving.

Ruth Funi Silinda was allegedly caught on camera in her Mercedes-Benz on the R40 between Hazyview and White River on September 9.

“She was pulled over for driving 114km per hour in a 60km zone,” said Hazyview police spokesperson Mpho Koli.

“She was not given a traffic fine but instead brought to the police station to be charged."

According to the law, motorists driving more than 100km per hour in a 60km zone are not given the option of paying an admission of guilt fine, but have to appear in court to explain themselves.

Silinda has not been asked to plead and is out on warning.

The premier's spokesperson, Mabutho Sithole, has stressed that the media should not link Silinda to Mabuza.

"She is the ex-wife and there is nothing that links her with the premier. They even don't have children together," he said.

On Monday, Silinda, who owns Lumkani Construction in Mbombela, refused to comment on the case.

"I cannot comment on that," she said, before cutting the call.
